Mayors’ Triple First
Monday, April 20, 2009
Keighley Town Mayor Cllr Amjad Zaman scored a hattrick on Sunday when he officially launched the town’s new Farmer’s Market, the Parish Survey and a brand new magazine all in one go.
Cllr Zaman, thanked the organisers of the market, the first on the site of the ‘New Green’ since it was built on in 1847. The mayor observed the busy stalls doing brisk trade and commented that, “this market is just what Keighley needs to help bring people back into the town. I’m sure it will go from strength to strength. Other towns in the Bradford District have been clamouring for a market of this quality and today we have proved that the Town Council can deliver for Keighley”
At the market which will be held every third Sunday of the month, Cllr Zaman gave out the first copies of the council’s new 16 page magazine simply called ‘Keighley’ and added “the council is very good at doing things that benefit Keighley Parish but very poor at letting people know this. The new Magazine, coupled with the launch of the Parish Plan consultation is the council’s way of letting people know what it is doing and asking them what they would like to see for the area.”
Cllr Tony Wright, Chairman of the Council’s Strategy & Policy Committee, explained why it was being done….
“As part of the detailed Parish Plan which the Town Council must prepare, it is important that we survey the needs and the wishes of all of the Electors in Keighley Parish. To do this we are mailing out an 8-page Community Questionnaire to every house in the Parish as part of our new Parish Magazine, it is the biggest consultation in the town since the 1991 census”.
Town Clerk Miggy Bailey added…
“KEIGHLEY the magazine will inform the public with details of the comprehensive range of positive activities in which the Town Council is involved. It is so easy for people to misunderstand what the Town Council is about.
“In fact the Town Council, now just completing its 7th year of existence, has brought a whole wealth of new activity into Keighley; has funded an astonishing variety of voluntary groups; has raised the profile of the Town through its boundary sign-branding; has multiplied the ‘Feel Good Factor’ through its events; has partnered a number of new development projects; and above all, has consistently and courageously fought for a better deal for all of the citizens of Keighley.”
The magazine is also available online at http://www.keighley.gov.uk/keighley/apr09.pdf
And a special online version of the survey is available at www.ktownplan.com/ with a free draw for cash prizes.
