Race the train

Monday, July 20, 2009

The annual sportKeighley Race the Train Cycle Challenge attracted both locals and a number of riders from all over Yorkshire in order to tackle the 4.8 mile route from Keighley to Oxenhope.  Riding in aid of Sue Ryder Care at Manorlands, forty-seven starters lined up at Keighley Station to await the blast of the horn from the 09.40 KWVR diesel service to set them on their way.

Defending champion and route record holder Matt Denby from Oxenhope was given a  good run for his money by 15-year-old Joe Moses and Andy Geall from Halifax, the latter being Calderdale’s Cycling Development Officer! Stiff headwinds meant that there was no record this year but the first three riders all bettered 15 minutes for the trip.

Former world downhill mountain bike champion Karen Ballantine, riding in Keighley & Craven colours, put in a magnificent ride to come in as first lady in 20th place overall, whilst husband Dick managed to beat the rest of his K&C colleagues in 8th.

Three generations of the Norton family took part, with Dave Norton (in his 30s) leading in Owen Norton (aged 9) and Fred Norton (aged 81) in the longer event and Lucas Norton (aged 7) in the shorter ride!!!

No less than thirty-five riders beat the train, which came in at 23 minutes and 9 seconds.

There were also some great rides by youngsters who started from Lees Primary School at Cross Roads, with the Keighley “Just Ride” Cycle Club Arkwright family (Khyia-Rhys, aged 7, Bailey-Bradley, aged 8 and mum Janet-Alison) featuring strongly.

The many riders of all standards worked hard to beat the wind and all enjoyed a bacon buttie at Oxenhope Station courtesy of the Bay Horse Inn in Oxenhope.  Riders also received a “Ride for Ryder” medal and (courtesy of the Keighley Festival) a copy of Malcolm Hanson’s historic walks book, with routes developed by local school-children.  The sun even came out!!

Full results were as follows.  Many thanks to all those who helped to make it happen!
